AMERICAN SCHOOL OF CLASSICAL STUDIES AT ATHENS (ASCSA) GALA 2024 at GOTHAM HALL in Manhattan

Yesterday evening’s AMERICAN SCHOOL OF CLASSICAL STUDIES AT ATHENS (ASCSA) GALA 2024 at GOTHAM HALL in Manhattan was an AMAZING EVENT and the institution’s Executive Director George Orfanakos is to be Congratulated !! . We had a great and fantastic time with good friends at our table which included Marina Belessis Casoria, Peter Stavrianidis, Dr. Daniskas, Stamati Ghikas, Agni Zotis , James Gerkis, Emily Spratt, Yanna Katsageorgi, Pantelis Panos the School’s General Manager, and Takis Karkanas the School’s Wiener Laboratory Director among others. This year they honored MARY R. LEFKOWITZ an American scholar of Classics & the Professor Emerita of Classical Studies at Wellesley College, for her outstanding contributions to the advancement of knowledge of Ancient Greece.
The American School of Classical Studies at Athens (ASCSA), the oldest and largest U.S. overseas research center, has left a profound and enduring legacy on the advanced study of of all aspects of Hellenic culture from Ancient Hellas to the present day, shaping scholarship, education, and cultural exchange for over a century. Founded in 1881, its impact extends far beyond its original mandate, influencing diverse fields such as archaeology, history, art, literature and beyond. Its research facilities include the Gennadius Library is one of the most important libraries in Hellas, the Blegen Library is one of the world's premier research libraries for classical studies and archaeology, Archives and Personal Papers an active and innovative research center encompassing a wide range of scholarly fields, as well as the latest state of the art Wiener Laboratory serving the interests of archaeological scholars both in the Hellenic Republic and abroad through research and cutting-edge scientific analysis with over 150 sponsored projects to date.
At its core, ASCSA serves as a bridge between American graduate students and scholars from nearly 200 North American colleges and universities and the rich cultural heritage of Greece. Through its programs, including fellowships, excavations, and publications, it has facilitated groundbreaking research and fostered a deep understanding of Greek civilization. Scholars from around the world have benefited from its resources, contributing to a global network of academic collaboration.

Poems were recited by Efi Hantzoulis, actress, writer, Spring Symphony (Yiannis Ritsos), Papatheodorou Yiannis, poet, Parthenon (Kostis Palamas) and Katerina Kalampaliki "Peace". Attendees were: The baritone Petros Salatas, protagonist of the National Opera, the sculptor Georgios Roussis, Conservator of Public Works of Art, Dr. Stamatis Georgoulis, Yiannis Karakasidis, president of the Cultural Center of Zakynthos Athens "Dionysios Romas" , the lyricist Avra ​​Tsalamaniou, the writer Katerina Douga-Kotopoulou and members of the Hellenic Literary Society. Program - Poetry set to music: Parthenon (Costis Palamas), Caryatides (Ioannis Polemis), Spring Symphony (Yiannis Ritsos), Daughter of Athens (Lord Byron), Peace (Katerina Kalampaliki), In an old temple (Miltiadis Malakasis), arias of Helen the Fair from the opera "The Homer's Iliad", aria of Hermes from the opera "Prometheus Bound", Melina (song dedicated to Melina Mercouri). Every year on 9 May we celebrate peace, unity and cooperation in Europe, as well as the European principles and values ​​that unite us in the European Union. May 9th is the anniversary of the historic "Shuman Declaration". In a speech in Paris in 1950, Robert Schumann, then the French foreign minister, proposed a new form of political cooperation in Europe, which would prevent any possibility of war between European peoples. His vision was to create a European entity that would centrally manage coal and steel production. The treaty establishing this body was signed just one year later. The Schuman proposal is considered the beginning of today's European Union. The 74th anniversary of Europe Day also marks 50 years since the restoration of Democracy in Greece.

On Europe Day every year on 9 May we celebrate peace and unity in Europe. This date marks the anniversary of the historic 'Schuman Declaration', with which Robert Schuman set out his proposal for a new form of political cooperation in Europe, capable of making war between European nations unthinkable. Robert Schuman's proposal is considered the beginning of today's European Union.
The Hellenic Literary Society was founded on May 19, 1934 with headquarters in Athens and professional writers as members. Its purpose and position is "the production of intellectual and cultural work while at the same time fighting for the rights of the Greek writers of the place as a whole".
Panagiotis Karousos is a composer of the Renaissance type whose music focuses on man. He became known through his operas (Prometheus Bound, Trachinies – Olympic Flame, Alexander the Great, Iliad), while recently he made an opening in popular songs in lyrics of great Greek and foreign poets. Many media have mentioned his work, while he has been awarded repeatedly in Greece and abroad, for his contribution to art.

Changing trends in men’s fashion bring hard times to a master tailor. When the bank threatens to repossess his shop and his father is taken ill, he takes action with a wondrously strange tailor shop on wheels. Determined to survive, he reluctantly turns to sewing for women and manages to reinvent himself while bringing style to the brides of Athens.

60 years ago, a black and white film with a little known actress crashed the 1960 Thessaloniki International Film Festival when it took home the Best Picture, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor Awards!

The film was MADALENA. The little known actress was Aliki Vougiouklaki. The Best Supporting Actor was Pantelis Zervos.
60 years later, Finos Film Official has restored a print of MADALENA ~ ΜΑΝΤΑΛΕΝΑ and have generously allowed us to screen it during our On Line Greek Film Festival, July 10-20, 2020.
