May 9th is the anniversary of the historic "Shuman Declaration". In a speech in Paris in 1950, Robert Schumann, then the French foreign minister, proposed a new form of political cooperation in Europe, which would prevent any possibility of war between European peoples. His vision was to create a European entity that would centrally manage coal and steel production. The treaty establishing this body was signed just one year later. The Schuman proposal is considered the beginning of today's European Union. The 74th anniversary of Europe Day also marks 50 years since the restoration of Democracy in Greece.
