Το άγαλμα έχει ύψος 1.80μ. και είναι μέρος ενός συνόλου γλυπτών που αφιερώθηκαν στον Απόλλωνα από τον Πολύζαλο, που ήταν τύραννος της Γέλας, στη Σικελία και έχει υμνήσει τις νίκες του ο Πίνδαρος.

Πρόκειται για ένα από τα σημαντικότερα γλυπτά της αρχαίας ελληνικής τέχνης της πρώιμης κλασικής εποχής.

Η δημιουργία του χρονικά τοποθετείται αμέσως μετά τους Περσικούς πολέμους, ενώ ως δημιουργός του έχει προταθεί ο Πυθαγόρας από το Ρήγιο ή, κατ' άλλους, ο Κάλαμις ή ο Κριτίας.

Ο Πολύζαλος ήταν γιος του Δεινομένη και αδελφός του Θρασύβουλου, του Γέλωνα και του Ιέρωνα, της γνωστής οικογένειας των τυράννων των Συρακουσών.

Μετά τη νίκη του στα Πύθια, το 478 π.Χ., ο Πολύζαλος αφιέρωσε το τέθριππο άρμα με τον Ηνίοχο στο ιερό του Απόλλωνα, στους Δελφούς.

Είναι πιθανό να υπήρχε και άλλη ανθρώπινη μορφή στο χάλκινο αυτό σύνολο, και αυτή η μορφή θα πρέπει να ήταν ενδεχομένως το παιδί που κρατάει τα άλογα.

Για τους βολβούς των ματιών χρησιμοποιήθηκε λευκό σμάλτο, ώστε να υπάρχει μια τέλεια απόδοση που προσεγγίζει απόλυτα ένα φυσικό ανθρώπινο μάτι.

Για την ίριδά τους χρησιμοποιήθηκε καστανή ημιπολύτιμη πέτρα, ενώ οι κόρες των ματιών είναι κατάμαυρες.

Οι βλεφαρίδες αποδόθηκαν με μικρά χάλκινα σύρματα, ενώ λεπτά φύλλα κοκκινωπού χαλκού ζωντανεύουν τα σαρκώδη χείλη του.

Τα μαλλιά του μοιάζουν να είναι ακόμη υγρά από τον ιδρώτα, στο τέλος της υπερπροσπάθειας για τη νίκη.

Είναι κολλημένα στο κεφάλι, σε μικρούς βοστρύχους και συγκρατούνται από μια ένθετη ασημένια ταινία, που περιδένει το κεφάλι.

Αυτή η μαιανδρική κορδέλα στο κεφάλι λέγεται ότι είναι το επίσημο έμβλημα των νικητών Καβείρων.

Το χάλκινο αυτό σύνολο έμεινε στη θέση του περίπου ενάμισι αιώνα, και κατακρημνίσθηκε το 373 π.Χ., από ένα μεγάλο σεισμό, που συντάραξε το Ιερό των Δελφών και σώριασε σε ερείπια πολλά από τα κτίσματά του, ακόμη και τον ίδιο τον ναό του Απόλλωνα.

Ο περιηγητής Παυσανίας που επισκέπτεται τους Δελφούς στο δεύτερο μισό του 2ου μ.Χ. αιώνα, ενώ περιγράφει με λεπτομέρειες το Ιερό του Απόλλωνα και τα αγάλματα που βρίσκονται εκεί, δεν αναφέρει καθόλου τον Ηνίοχο.

Όπως φαίνεται άλλωστε, στις περιγραφές του, πολλά από τα ιερά των Δελφών είχαν σωριαστεί ήδη σε ερείπια.

Ο αρχαιολόγος Μανόλης Ανδρόνικος σε ένα κείμενό του χρησιμοποιεί την έκφραση «ξυπνή ματιά», για να περιγράψει με αυτό τον τρόπο το «ζωντανό» βλέμμα του εξαίσιου αγάλματος.

Ο αείμνηστος αρχαιολόγος δεν είναι ο μοναδικός που αναφέρεται στα μάτια και στο βλέμμα αυτού του εντυπωσιακού χάλκινου άνδρα της αρχαιότητας, και δεν είναι μόνο τα μάτια του που εντυπωσιάζουν, αλλά και τα χέρια του, που κρατούν με στιβαρό τρόπο τα ηνία του τέθριππου.

Το ίδιο εκπληκτική είναι και η απόδοση των ποδιών του Ηνίοχου, που πατούν στέρεα στο βάθρο, με τις φλέβες τους να δίνουν την εντύπωση ότι σφύζει μέσα τους το αίμα.

The statue is 1.80m high. and is part of a set of sculptures dedicated to Apollo by Polyzalos, who was a tyrant of Gela, in Sicily and Pindar has praised his victories.

It is one of the most important sculptures of ancient Greek art of the early classical era.

Its creation is placed immediately after the Persian wars, while Pythagoras has been proposed by Regio or, according to others, Kalamis or Kritias.

Polyzalos was the son of Deinomeni and the brother of Thrasyvoulos, Gelon and Ieron, of the well-known family of the tyrants of Syracuse.

After his victory at Pythia, in 478 BC, Polyzalos dedicated the four-legged chariot with Iniochos to the sanctuary of Apollo, at Delphi.

It is possible that there was another human figure in this bronze ensemble, and this figure must have been the child holding the horses.

White enamel was used for the eyeballs, so that there is a perfect performance that perfectly approaches a natural human eye.

Brown semi-precious stone was used for their iris, while the pupils of the eyes are black.

The lashes were rendered with small copper wires, while thin sheets of reddish copper enliven its fleshy lips.

His hair still seems to be wet from sweat, at the end of the over-effort to win.

They are glued to the head, in small tresses and are held by an inserted silver ribbon, which wraps around the head.

This meander ribbon on the head is said to be the official emblem of the Kaveri winners.

This bronze ensemble remained in place for about a century and a half, and was overthrown in 373 BC by a great earthquake, which shook the Sanctuary of Delphi and destroyed many of its buildings, even the temple of Apollo .

The traveler Pausanias who visits Delphi in the second half of the 2nd AD. century, while describing in detail the Sanctuary of Apollo and the statues that are there, does not mention the Envoy at all.

As can be seen from his descriptions, many of the sanctuaries of Delphi were already in ruins.

Archaeologist Manolis Andronikos in one of his texts uses the expression "awake look", to describe in this way the "living" look of the exquisite statue.

The late archaeologist is not the only one who refers to the eyes and gaze of this impressive bronze man of antiquity, and it is not only his eyes that impress, but also his hands, which firmly hold the reins of the tetripp.

Equally amazing is the performance of the Driver's legs, which press firmly on the pedestal, with their veins giving the impression that blood is pulsating inside them.
