Lyric tragedy Trachiniae by Sophocles
Panagiotis Karousos' contemporary opera "Thrachiniae" made her triumphant debut at Lincoln Center, in New York, on March 26, 2016 under the name of "Olympic Flame". On July 5, 2016 the opera represented in the United States at the Open-Air Festival of Astoria (Athens Square Park), on the occasion of the 2016 Olympic Games.
In Trachiniae, described the sufferings of Heracles and the tragic death of Deianeira.
The operatic tragedy "Thrachiniae" or "Olympic Flame" presents the Greek mythology and philosophy with Doric lyricism, and as a musical workshop made a major contribution to world of culture. The composition and orchestration of the opera is influenced by the post-romantic era in music and other classical elements of Greek antiquity, thus making the work a pioneering opera for the future operatic stages.
Dominant position in this work, as in others of Panagiotis Karousos, is the discovery of high lyricism associated with the ancient Greek tragedy.
The opera made World Premiere at the Notre-Dame Cathedral of Montreal with soloist, choir and a large Symphony Orchestra under the direction of maestro Andre Gauthier.
In Greece, the opera was presented in the Old House Parliament, with costumes directed by bass Basilis Asimakopoulos, starring also as Heracles, and soprano Irini Konsta.
The bel-canto style of the original melodic arias and the melancholic romanticism make this opera popular over the audiences.
