Adamantia "Manto" Mavrogenous (1796 - July 1848)


She was a Patriot and a Heroine of the Greek War of Independence.

Born in the City of Trieste in the then Hapsburg Empire in 1796, by 1809 she and her family had moved to the island of Paros, her father who was a wealthy Merchant, was also a member of Filiki Eteria.

After her father's death in 1818, she went to the island of Mykonos, the island of her origin and invited the leaders of the island to join in the Greek Revolution.

For the Greek cause, Mavrogenous would spent her entire fortune on ships, which were used to pursue Ottoman vessels all over the Aegean, while also using her fortune to purchase equipment, weapons and supplies for the fighters.

Mavrogenous was a major contributor to the Revolution and to the Greek victory. After the War, the 1st Head of State of Greece, Ioannis Kapodistrias, awarded Mavrogenous the military rank of Lieutenant General.

Mavrogenous died on Paros in July 1848 in poverty, having spent all her fortune for Greece's Independence
