Composer Panagiotis Karousos was awarded by the International Academy of Art for the World C. P. Cavafy Day

 

On Tuesday, April 29, 2025, the composer Panagiotis Karousos was awarded the First Honorary Award of Excellence by the International Academy of Art for the Establishment and Institutionalization of the World Day of C. P. Cavafy, April 29, under the auspices of the National Council of Clubs and Centers for UNESCO of the founder of the World Day of Cavafy, George Fountoulis, for the Establishment and Institutionalization of the World Day of C. P. Cavafy, April 29. The award to Mr. Panagiotis Karousos was presented by Mavromatidou – Papailia Theoni, Deputy Mayor of Culture, Education, Lifelong Learning & Youth of the Municipality of Loutraki Perachora Agioi Theodoroi, and Matsouka Maria – Christina, director - "Apostolos Pavlos" Schools – High School. The poem by C.P. Cavafy "The Horses of Achilles" masterfully set to music by Panagiotis Karousos was recited by students Theodora Daliviga and Eleni Ioannidi. The award was given at the presentation of the opera "ILIADA" by Homer at the Alexandrio Conference Center of Loutraki for the World Cavafy Day - April 29.

The opera Iliad by Homer with music and libretto by Panayoti Karousos was successfully presented at the Alexandrio Conference Center of Loutraki of the Municipality of Loutraki - Perachora - Agioi Theodoroi by the "Apostolos Pavlos" Schools of Corinth, it is part of the Panhellenic Educational Program "New Homerides 2025". The well-known soprano Irini Konsta starred in the role of Beautiful Helen, who impressed and was applauded. The members of the "Rhapsodoi" Musical Ensemble participated: Irene Konsta (soprano - soloist of the National Opera), Maria Grigoriou (member of the Athens Concert Hall choir "MUSICA - Choir of the Friends of Athens Music"), Niki Zacharopoulou (member of the Attica Region choir), Yannis Darrios (tenor, member of the Musical Ensembles of the Municipality of Athens), and the excellent musician Harry Giann (piano). Choir of the "Apostolos Pavlos" High School under the teaching of music teacher Grigoris Kontis. "Apostle Paul" High School Theater Group under the supervision of philologists Andreas Koutsopoulos and Maria Matsouka, director - "Apostle Paul" High School. Achilles: Thanasis Marinos, Agamemnon: Pavlos Kourkouliotis, Athena: Christina Stathouli, Chrysida: Danae Bitsakou, Thetis: Eleni Daliviga, Briseis: Eleni Ioannidi, Calchas: Sakis Papaioannou, Chrysida: Ioannis Kallipozis, Odysseus: Anastasios Papageorgiou, Narrator: Theodora Daliviga. The students interactively presented an act of Rhapsody A of Homer's Iliad, and performed the choral "Shield of Achilles". The Hymn to the Muse, Achilles' aria "Aphthiton kleos", the choral "Shield of Achilles", and the arias of Beautiful Helen were performed. As part of the introductory seminar: "Prosody as a connecting link between opera and ancient Greek literature" with the composer Panagiotis Karousos as speaker (prosody analysis), which preceded the opera, examples of Prosody on phrases from Homer's Iliad were performed by Niki Zacharopoulou and Maria Grigoriou. There was also a video showing of Maria Callas performing the aria “Agni Thea” from Bellini’s opera Norma. Ms. Annita Tsapalou, head of the School Activities Department of the Corinthian Educational Service, delivered a welcome address. Attendees included: Archim. Fr. Timotheos Flegkas, Director of the “Ap. Pavlos” Lyceum Schools of the Isthmus of Corinth and the teachers who accompanied the students of the “Apostolos Pavlos” Schools of the Isthmus of Corinth. Nikos Panousopoulos, IT specialist, associate of Ms. Annita Tsapalou, Deputy Director of Education of Corinth. Ioannis Galanis, member of the Board of Directors of the WPF, founder and General Director of the EN.P.A.N. (Associations of Culture and Development) and administrative member of the World Philosophical Forum. The opera was very well received by the students, who warmly applauded the artists. Also, the composer Panagiotis Karousos was declared an honorary founding member of the International Cavafy Day, April 29.
