A single invitation left unextended was enough to ignite a conflict among gods. From that slight grew a chain of events that would end in war.
In Greek mythology, Eris personified discord and rivalry. When the mortal hero Peleus married the sea nymph Thetis, the gods of Olympus were invited to the celebration.
Eris was deliberately excluded, as her presence was believed to bring conflict. In response, she arrived unannounced and cast among the guests a golden apple inscribed with the words meaning “for the most beautiful.”
The apple immediately became the focus of dispute among Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite. Each claimed the title for herself. Unable or unwilling to judge between them, Zeus assigned the decision to Paris, a prince of Troy who was living as a shepherd at the time.
The three goddesses approached Paris individually, each offering a bribe in exchange for the apple. Hera promised political power and dominion.
Athena offered wisdom and victory in battle. Aphrodite pledged the love of the most beautiful woman in the world, Helen of Sparta. Paris awarded the apple to Aphrodite.
