Vasilios Chrissochos presented an evening of "Ancient Greek Gastronomy" with Chef Dimitrios Syligardos at the Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York

 The Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater NY in Conjunction with the Porphyra Foundation and the AHEPA Cultural Commission District 6, presented a unique dining experience on Saturday, February 22nd, at the Stathakion Cultural Center in Astoria.

The event was a delightful evening of "Ancient Hellenic Gastronomy" with Chef Dimitrios Sylligardos. Guests enjoyed a Four-Course meal like the Ancient Greeks. We learned about the roots of some of our traditional delicacies and the unique diet of our ancestors. Vassilios Chrissochos presented a documentary and an introductory message written by the Chef.

The event began with Mycenaean Dakos and Crispy Honey Fritters with Cheese for appetizers followed by a Dorian Salad. The main course was the Spartan Melas Zomos and the Athenian Pork Kontosouvli. Dessert was Plakountas with Anthotyro, the original Cheesecake. Guests drank plentiful offerings of homemade Oinomelo with the main course and Rakomelo with their dessert.

The Porphyra Foundation’s Vassilios and Despina Chrissochos worked very diligently with Chef Dimitrios Sylligardos to make this event successful. The Chef, in the end, answered questions as a Spartan Hoplite dressed in full armor to the delight of the crowd who took pictures with him and his (non-culinary) weapons.

The President of the Federation of Hellenic Societies, Mr. Demos Siokis, gave the opening remarks highlighting the importance of our ancient Mediterranean Cuisine and its health benefits. Many members of AHEPA and the Hellenic Federation were seen enjoying themselves. Many thanks to the UFT Hellenic American Educators and their president, Deme Savopoulou, who came as a whole group as well. Everyone wanted to know when the next Ancient Hellenic Gastronomy event would take place next praising the wonderful work of Chef Dimitrios Sylligardos.

Mr. Vassilios Chrissochos promised the Porphyra Foundation would plan something special again with Chef Dimitri soon.

Mr. Chrissochos is a Hellenic Federation's Executive Board Member and President of its Cultural Committee. He is also AHEPA's Director of Hellenism for District 6 NY and Chair of AHEPA's National Cultural Commission.
