Τα Μετέωρα στο επίκεντρο του διεθνούς διαλόγου για τον πολιτισμό και την εκπαίδευση. Σε ένα περιβάλλον μοναδικής παγκόσμιας πολιτιστικής και πνευματικής αξίας, τα Μετέωρα, πραγματοποιήθηκαν οι εργασίες του Εκτελεστικού Συμβουλίου της Ομοσπονδίας Ομίλων και Συλλόγων για την UNESCO Ευρώπης και Β. Αμερικής (ENAFCAU), από τις 10 έως τις 13 Ιουνίου 2026.

Η επίσημη έναρξη του Εκτελεστικού Συμβουλίου πραγματοποιήθηκε παρουσία εκπροσώπων της Πολιτείας, της Τοπικής Αυτοδιοίκησης, της Εκκλησίας, των Σωμάτων Ασφαλείας και των τοπικών φορέων, γεγονός που ανέδειξε τη σημασία της διεθνούς διοργάνωσης για την περιοχή των Μετεώρων και την Ελλάδα.

Η επίσημη έναρξη εκ μέρους των κεντρικών της UNESCO στο Παρίσι έγινε από την Dr. Assel Utegenova, Liaison Officer και Focal Point for Associations and Clubs for UNESCO και εκ μέρους της Ευρωπαϊκής και Βορειοαμερικανικής Ομοσπονδίας Ομίλων και Συλλόγων UNESCO πραγματοποίησαν ο Πρόεδρος της Ομοσπονδίας Ιωάννης Μαρωνίτης και η Επίτιμη Πρόεδρος Daniela Popescu, οι οποίοι αναφέρθηκαν στον στρατηγικό ρόλο της ENAFCAU στην προώθηση των αξιών της UNESCO, στην ενίσχυση της διεθνούς συνεργασίας και στη σημασία της ενεργού συμμετοχής της κοινωνίας των πολιτών στην προστασία της πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς και στην προώθηση της εκπαίδευσης και του πολιτισμού.

Την εκδήλωση τίμησαν με την παρουσία τους και χαιρέτισαν ο π. Ηρακλής Φίλιος, κληρικός της Ιεράς Μητροπόλεως Σταγών και Μετεώρων και εφημέριος της Ενορίας Διάβας, η Αντιπεριφερειάρχης Π.Ε. Τρικάλων Χρύσα Ντιντή, η Αντιδήμαρχος Παιδείας και Πολιτισμού Δήμου Μετεώρων Λίλα Μπαντέκα Νάνη, ο Αντιδήμαρχος Τουρισμού του Δήμου Μετεώρων Φώτης Καραθανάσης, ο Διοικητής του Αστυνομικού Τμήματος Μετεώρων κ. Λαφαζάνης, ο Δασάρχης κ. Ζαχαρόπουλος, ο Πρόεδρος του Εμπορικού Συλλόγου Καλαμπάκας Σωτήρης Πούλιος, ο Πρόεδρος της International Action Art Θεσσαλίας Κώστας Φαμίσσης και ο Πρόεδρος του Τμήματος Οικονομικών Επιστημών του Δημοκριτείου Πανεπιστημίου Θράκης, Καθηγητής Δημήτριος Δημητρίου.

Ιδιαίτερη βαρύτητα προσέδωσαν στη διοργάνωση οι χαιρετισμοί που απέστειλαν ο Υπουργός Ψηφιακής Διακυβέρνησης Δημήτρης Παπαστεργίου, καθώς και οι Βουλευτές ΝΔ της Περιφερειακής Ενότητας Τρικάλων Κώστας Σκρέκας, Κατερίνα Παπακώστα-Παλιούρα και Θανάσης Λιούτας, οι οποίοι εξήραν τη σημασία της φιλοξενίας ενός τόσο σημαντικού διεθνούς θεσμού στην Ελλάδα και ιδιαίτερα στα Μετέωρα, έναν τόπο με παγκόσμια ακτινοβολία και ιδιαίτερο συμβολισμό για τις αξίες της UNESCO.

Κατά τις συνεδριάσεις εγκρίθηκε το πρόγραμμα εργασιών και παρουσιάστηκε ο απολογισμός δράσεων της προηγούμενης περιόδου, ενώ εξετάστηκαν οι στρατηγικές προτεραιότητες της Ομοσπονδίας για τα επόμενα χρόνια.

Ιδιαίτερης σημασίας υπήρξε η αποδοχή της πρότασης να αναλάβει καθήκοντα Συμβούλου της ENAFCAU ο Jacques Rao, Σύμβουλος της Γαλλικής Εθνικής Επιτροπής για την UNESCO και επί σειρά ετών στέλεχος της UNESCO στο Παρίσι, ο οποίος συντόνισε επίσης τις συζητήσεις που αναπτύχθηκαν σχετικά με την πολιτιστική διπλωματία, την εκπαίδευση, τη συμμετοχή των νέων στα προγράμματα της UNESCO.

Mount Olympus for Promitheia 2026

 Hundreds of participants from Greece and abroad gathered once again at the foothills of Mount Olympus for Promitheia 2026, one of the country's most distinctive cultural and religious events dedicated to the revival of ancient Greek spiritual traditions.

Held over four days near Litochoro, beneath the mountain that Greek mythology identifies as the home of the Olympian gods, the annual festival featured ceremonial processions, torchlight rituals, philosophical discussions, theatrical performances, music, and symbolic reenactments inspired by ancient Greek religion and culture. The event has been organized for more than three decades and has grown into an international gathering for people interested in Hellenic traditions and pre-Christian Greek spirituality.

Participants dressed in tunics and ancient-inspired clothing took part in ceremonies honoring Prometheus—the Titan who, according to Greek mythology, stole fire from the gods and gave it to humanity. The program also included lectures on ancient philosophy, artistic performances, cultural exhibitions, athletic activities, and traditional rituals celebrating the values of classical Greece.

One of the festival's most recognizable moments was the torch procession through Litochoro, followed by ceremonies held in the Prometheus Grove near Mount Olympus. Organizers describe the gathering as an opportunity to reconnect with Greece's ancient philosophical heritage while promoting dialogue, education, and cultural identity rooted in the country's classical past.

Beyond its religious dimension, Promitheia has also become a cultural attraction, drawing visitors curious about ancient Greek customs, mythology, and philosophy. Many attendees camp in the area throughout the four-day celebration, participating in discussions, performances, and communal events set against the backdrop of Greece's most legendary mountain.

Although the festival has generated debate over the years because of its association with modern Hellenic polytheism, supporters argue that its primary mission is to preserve and showcase aspects of Greece's ancient cultural heritage. The organizers say the event welcomes anyone interested in Greek civilization, regardless of religious beliefs, and aims to promote the timeless values of philosophy, knowledge, excellence, and respect for nature that emerged from the ancient Greek world.

As Promitheia 2026 concluded, participants departed Mount Olympus after another year of ceremonies celebrating one of the world's oldest cultural traditions, reaffirming the festival's place as a unique expression of Greece's enduring connection to its ancient past.

As we celebrate America’s 250th Anniversary, we remember that the American and Greek Revolutions were connected not only by their ideals, but by the people who carried them forward.

When the American colonies declared that governments derive “their just powers from the consent of the governed,” they challenged the world to rethink liberty and self-government. Less than fifty years later, Greek revolutionaries fighting for independence embraced those same principles as they sought to reclaim their own nation after centuries of Ottoman rule.

The connection didn’t end there. Americans organized relief efforts, raised funds, and even traveled to Greece to fight alongside the revolutionaries. At the same time, the founders of the United States looked to ancient Athens, not as a perfect model, but as the birthplace of democratic thought and civic participation. Two nations, separated by an ocean, became linked by a shared belief that freedom is worth defending.

That legacy continues today.

A New Chapter for the Federation

It was a great pleasure and honor to have been invited last week to the swearing in ceremony of the new Officers of the Board of the Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York, an important and encouraging milestone for organized Hellenism in New York.

I was especially honored to be invited to offer remarks on this significant occasion. After years of challenges, the installation of the Federation’s new leadership marks not only a new beginning, but also a renewed opportunity to build upon a foundation of unity, cooperation, and service to our community.

Enclosed is a short video of my remarks from the ceremony. I wish the new Officers and Board every success as they lead the Federation into its next chapter. May their tenure be guided by unity, vision, and a steadfast commitment to Hellenism, ensuring that the Federation continues to serve as a strong and enduring voice for our community for generations to come.

Αισθάνθηκα ιδιαίτερη τιμή που μου ζητήθηκε να απευθύνω σύντομο χαιρετισμό σε αυτή τη σημαντική περίσταση. Ύστερα από χρόνια προκλήσεων, η ανάληψη των καθηκόντων της νέας ηγεσίας σηματοδοτεί όχι μόνο μια νέα αρχή, αλλά και μια ανανεωμένη ευκαιρία να οικοδομήσουμε πάνω στα θεμέλια της ενότητας, της συνεργασίας και της προσφοράς προς την Ομογένειά μας.

The Day New York Gave the Declaration of Independence Its Public Voice

On Thursday, July 9, 2026, I invite Hellenic Americans and our friends to join us as we retrace the historic journey from City Hall Park (the Commons) to Bowling Green, following in the footsteps of the New Yorkers who, 250 years ago, first gathered to hear the Declaration of Independence read aloud in New York City.

I am honored to have worked with the organizers to help ensure a strong Hellenic American presence in this once-in-a-generation commemoration. The East Mediterranean Business Culture Alliance (EMBCA) is proud to march with the Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York, AHEPA Delphi Chapter #25, the Sons of the American Revolution, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, and fellow New Yorkers, civic organizations, and ethnic communities in commemorating one of the most significant, yet too often overlooked, days of the American Revolution.

I also invite other Hellenic American organizations and individuals to join us as we honor the ideals of liberty, democracy, and civic responsibility that unite our American and Hellenic heritage.

This morning, I look forward to joining John Catsimatidis live on The Cats Roundtable on 77 WABC Radio (8:30–10:00 a.m.), where we will discuss this historic July 9th commemoration and invite New Yorkers to participate in this once-in-a-generation celebration of our nation’s 250th anniversary. John will also be joining us on July 9th and will read a portion of the Declaration of Independence at Bowling Green. Later today, at approximately 1:00 p.m., I will also be interviewed on Hellenic Public Radio Cosmos FM 91.5 to discuss this important event.

Following discussions with Theodore Pavlakos, I also arranged for the original commemorative plaque on the second flagpole at Bowling Green to be professionally cleaned and restored (see the before-and-after photographs below).

The second flagpole was erected in 1996 through the efforts of Denis Liberatos, Theodore Pavlakos, and Dino Rallis, under the auspices of the Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York, to commemorate the 175th Anniversary of the beginning of the Hellenic Revolution of 1821. Through the generosity and vision of the Hellenic American community, it has since become a lasting symbol not only for Hellenes, but also for many nations and communities that gather at Bowling Green to celebrate their heritage, commemorate historic struggles, and honor the cause of freedom.

In a fitting tribute during America’s 250th Anniversary year, for the first time, the current United States flag will be raised on the Hellenic American flagpole, while a historic American flag will be flown from the original Bowling Green flagpole. This symbolic moment beautifully links the enduring legacies of the American Revolution of 1776 and the Hellenic Revolution of 1821, reminding us that the ideals of liberty, self-determination, and democracy transcend borders and continue to inspire generations.

I hope you will join us on July 9th as we commemorate this remarkable chapter in our nation’s history and celebrate the enduring bonds between our American and Hellenic heritage.

Την Πέμπτη, 9 Ιουλίου 2026, προσκαλώ τους Ελληνοαμερικανούς και τους φίλους μας να συμμετάσχουν μαζί μας καθώς θα ανατρέξουμε στο ιστορικό ταξίδι από το Πάρκο του Δημαρχείου (την Κοινή Δημόσια Κοινότητα) στο Μπόουλινγκ Γκριν, ακολουθώντας τα βήματα των Νεοϋορκέζων που, πριν από 250 χρόνια, συγκεντρώθηκαν για πρώτη φορά για να ακούσουν τη Διακήρυξη της Ανεξαρτησίας να διαβάζεται δυνατά στη Νέα Υόρκη.

Είναι τιμή μου που συνεργάστηκα με τους διοργανωτές για να διασφαλίσω μια ισχυρή Ελληνοαμερικανική παρουσία σε αυτόν τον μοναδικό εορτασμό της γενιάς. Σήμερα το πρωί, ανυπομονώ να συμμετάσχω ζωντανά με τον Τζον Κατσιματίδη στο The Cats Roundtable στο 77 WABC Radio (8:30–10:00 π.μ.), όπου θα συζητήσουμε αυτήν την ιστορική επέτειο της 9ης Ιουλίου και θα προσκαλέσουμε τους Νεοϋορκέζους να συμμετάσχουν σε αυτόν τον μοναδικό εορτασμό της 250ής επετείου του έθνους μας. Χάρη στη γενναιοδωρία και το όραμα της Ελληνοαμερικανικής κοινότητας, έκτοτε έχει γίνει ένα διαχρονικό σύμβολο όχι μόνο για τους Έλληνες, αλλά και για πολλά έθνη και κοινότητες που συγκεντρώνονται στο Bowling Green για να γιορτάσουν την κληρονομιά τους, να τιμήσουν τους ιστορικούς αγώνες και να τιμήσουν την υπόθεση της ελευθερίας.

Σε έναν ταιριαστό φόρο τιμής κατά τη διάρκεια της 250ής επετείου της Αμερικής, για πρώτη φορά, η σημερινή σημαία των Ηνωμένων Πολιτειών θα υψωθεί στον ιστό της Ελληνοαμερικανικής σημαίας, ενώ μια ιστορική αμερικανική σημαία θα κυματίσει από τον αρχικό ιστό του Μπόουλινγκ Γκριν. Αυτή η συμβολική στιγμή συνδέει όμορφα τη διαχρονική κληρονομιά της Αμερικανικής Επανάστασης του 1776 και της Ελληνικής Επανάστασης του 1821, υπενθυμίζοντάς μας ότι τα ιδανικά της ελευθερίας, της αυτοδιάθεσης και της δημοκρατίας υπερβαίνουν τα σύνορα και συνεχίζουν να εμπνέουν γενιές.
