Twenty-two ancient Greek artifacts have been returned from Israel to Greece

Twenty-two ancient Greek artifacts have been returned from Israel to Greece after being seized by Israeli authorities in a case involving illegally removed antiquities. The historic repatriation marks the first time Israel has returned ancient artifacts to Greece.

In a significant development for the protection of Greece’s cultural heritage, Israel has returned 22 ancient artifacts to Athens after authorities seized the objects as part of efforts to combat the illegal trafficking of antiquities.
The handover ceremony took place on October 13, 2026, at the National Archaeological Museum in Athens. Greek Culture Minister Lina Mendoni received the artifacts from Israel’s ambassador to Greece, Pnina Yanai, in the presence of Amir Ganor, head of the Israel Antiquities Authority’s Theft Prevention Unit.
The return represents a historic first in Greek-Israeli cooperation on the recovery of cultural treasures and highlights ongoing international efforts to combat the illicit trade in archaeological objects.
Which Ancient Greek Treasures Were Returned?
The collection consists of 22 objects, including 15 Attic vessels, six Corinthian vessels and a bronze statuette depicting a female figure.
Of the Attic vessels, 11 are black-figure, three are red-figure and one is black-glazed. The objects date from the Archaic and Classical periods of ancient Greece.
The Corinthian vessels date to the Archaic period, while the collection as a whole spans approximately 700 to 320 BC.
These artifacts provide valuable evidence of ancient Greek craftsmanship, artistic traditions and everyday life. However, the authenticity of the bronze female statuette requires further examination by specialists.
How Were the Artifacts Discovered in Israel?
The objects were discovered and seized by the Israel Antiquities Authority’s Theft Prevention Unit as part of efforts to combat the illegal trade in cultural property.
The precise circumstances surrounding their removal from Greece, their subsequent transfer to Israel and their discovery have not been fully disclosed in the available reports.
Nevertheless, their return represents an important step in international cooperation against antiquities trafficking and the recovery of cultural objects removed from their countries of origin.
Greek Culture Minister Welcomes Historic Repatriation
Greek Culture Minister Lina Mendoni welcomed the return, describing it as a significant development in relations between the two countries.
The repatriation marks the first time Israel has returned antiquities to Greece and is expected to strengthen cooperation between the two countries’ authorities in protecting cultural heritage.
Officials have also emphasized the importance of exchanging expertise and best practices to prevent the illegal excavation, trafficking and sale of archaeological objects.
Israeli Ambassador Pnina Yanai likewise highlighted the importance of returning cultural objects to their place of origin and preserving heritage for future generations.
Greece Continues Its Fight to Recover Lost Antiquities
The return of the 22 artifacts comes amid Greece’s broader campaign to recover antiquities that were illegally removed from its territory and subsequently ended up in private collections or museums abroad.
One of the most prominent cases remains the Parthenon Sculptures, which are held by the British Museum in London and whose return Greece continues to pursue.
The repatriation from Israel demonstrates how international cooperation can help countries recover important pieces of their cultural heritage.
For Greece, the return of the 22 objects represents another step toward restoring archaeological treasures to their homeland and preserving the country’s ancient history for future generations.
