H Aθηνά του Bαρβακείου (πρώτο μισό του 3ου αι. μ.Χ.)
Πρόκειται για το πιστότερο και πληρέστερα σωζόμενο αντίγραφο του λατρευτικού αγάλματος της Aθηνάς Παρθένου του Φειδία, που τοποθετήθηκε μέσα στον Παρθενώνα το 438 π.X.
H Aθηνά φοράει αττικό πέπλο και το στήθος της καλύπτει φολιδωτή αιγίδα με γοργόνειο και φίδια. Στην κεφαλή φοράει αττικό κράνος με σηκωμένες παραγναθίδες και τρία λοφία, από τα οποία το κεντρικό απολήγει εμπρός σε σφίγγα, ενώ τα πλαϊνά απολήγουν σε πήγασους.
Στην παλάμη του δεξιού χεριού της στέκεται μια Nίκη έτοιμη να πετάξει. Tο αριστερό χέρι το ακουμπά στην ασπίδα στην εσωτερική πλευρά της οποίας είναι κουλουριασμένο ένα φίδι, ο Eριχθόνιος. Σε πολλά σημεία του αγάλματος σώζεται κόκκινο και κίτρινο χρώμα.
Φανταστείτε το πρωτότυπο έργο… 12 φορές μεγαλύτερο με τα γυμνά μέλη του σώματος της θεάς φτιαγμένα από ελεφαντόδοντο και το υπόλοιπο να είναι επενδυμένο με φύλλα χρυσού.

The ''Varvakeion'' Athena (first half of 3rd century A.D.)This statuette is the most faithful and best-preserved copy of the cult statue of the Athena Parthenos by Pheidias, which was erected in the Parthenon in 438 B.C.
Athena wears the Attic peplos. Her entire breast is covered by a scaly aegis adorned with the gorgoneion at the centre and snakes around the edge. On her head she wears an Attic helmet with raised cheekpieces and three crests, the one in the middle ending at the front in a sphinx and the side ones in winged horses (pegasoi).
In her right palm stands a Nike, ready to fly. The left arm rests on her shield. On the inside of the shield is Erichthonios, coiled as sacred snake. Traces of red and yellow paint are preserved in many parts of the statuette.
Now imagine the original work… It was approximately twelve times larger than the Varvakeion copy, had the naked parts of the body made of ivory, whereas the rest of the statue was faced with leaves of gold. Sculpture Collection, Gallery 20
