Sunday’s SAIL TO FREEDOM regatta event in New York harbor heading to the Statue of Liberty to lay a wreath was spectacular and probably the most significant event , certainly in the U.S. , but maybe internationally around the world for the Hellenic Revolution of 1821 Bicentennial.
It was great to be among many friends both Hellenes and Philhellenes and to be asked to speak along with good friends John A. Catsimatidis, Congresswoman Carolyn B, Maloney, Congressman Gregory Meeks the Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and Congresswoman Nicole R. Malliotakis. I was very surprised, touched, honored and humbled in receiving the “Face of the Diaspora on the Bicentennial of the Hellenic Revolution of 1821 Award” at the event.

Five years ago , when New York was still emerging from the challenges of COVID-19 and a traditional parade was not possible, we chose not to cancel the commemoration of the 200th Anniversary of the start of the Hellenic Revolution of 1821, we chose to reimagine it. Congratulations to Eva Plakas for conceiving and putting together this extraordinary event.
Instead of marching through the streets of Manhattan, we took to the waters of New York Harbor in what became the historic “Sail to Freedom.” A flotilla of boats sailed from Lower Manhattan to the Statue of Liberty, where we held a wreath laying ceremony honoring the heroes of 1821 and celebrating the enduring bond between Hellas and America.
Looking back, it was one of the most significant Bicentennial commemorations in the United States and perhaps among the most meaningful internationally. It demonstrated that while circumstances may change, our commitment to remembering our history and those who fought for liberty does not.
It was a privilege to stand alongside many friends, both Hellenes and Philhellenes - John A. Catsimatidis, Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney, Congressman Gregory Meeks, then Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and CongresswomanNicole Malliotakis. I was also deeply surprised, touched, and humbled to receive the “Face of the Diaspora on the Bicentennial of the Hellenic Revolution of 1821 Award.”
I am honored to have helped support this effort. Sometimes history requires us to adapt, and in doing so we create new traditions that reflect the same timeless ideals of freedom, sacrifice, and democracy that inspired the Revolution of 1821.

Πλέοντας Ανάμεσα στην Ελλάδα και την Ελευθερία: Πέντε Χρόνια Μετά το Πλέον προς την Ελευθερία
Πριν από πέντε χρόνια, όταν η Νέα Υόρκη έβγαινε ακόμα από τις προκλήσεις της COVID-19 και μια παραδοσιακή παρέλαση δεν ήταν δυνατή, επιλέξαμε να μην ακυρώσουμε τον εορτασμό της 200ής επετείου από την έναρξη της Ελληνικής Επανάστασης του 1821 - επιλέξαμε να την επαναπροσδιορίσουμε. Συγχαρητήρια στην Εύα Πλάκα για τη σύλληψη και την οργάνωση αυτής της εξαιρετικής εκδήλωσης.
Αντί να παρελάσουμε στους δρόμους του Μανχάταν, βγήκαμε στα νερά του λιμανιού της Νέας Υόρκης σε αυτό που έγινε το ιστορικό «Πλέω προς την Ελευθερία». Ένας στολίσκος σκαφών απέπλευσε από το Κάτω Μανχάταν προς το Άγαλμα της Ελευθερίας, όπου πραγματοποιήσαμε μια τελετή κατάθεσης στεφάνων προς τιμήν των ήρωων του 1821 και γιορτάζοντας τον διαρκή δεσμό μεταξύ Ελλάδας και Αμερικής.
Κοιτάζοντας πίσω, ήταν ένας από τους σημαντικότερους εορτασμούς των διακοσιοστών επετείων στις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες και ίσως από τους πιο σημαντικούς διεθνώς. Απέδειξε ότι ενώ οι συνθήκες μπορεί να αλλάξουν, η δέσμευσή μας να θυμόμαστε την ιστορία μας και όσους αγωνίστηκαν για την ελευθερία δεν αλλάζει.
Ήταν προνόμιο να στέκομαι δίπλα σε πολλούς φίλους, Έλληνες και Φιλέλληνες - τον Τζον Α. Κατσιματίδη, τη βουλευτή Κάρολιν Μπ. Μαλόνεϊ, τον βουλευτή Γκρέγκορι Μικς, τότε πρόεδρο της Επιτροπής Εξωτερικών Υποθέσεων της Βουλής, και τη βουλευτή Νικόλ Μαλλιωτάκη. Επίσης, ένιωσα βαθιά έκπληξη, συγκίνηση και ταπεινότητα όταν έλαβα το βραβείο «Πρόσωπο της Διασποράς για την επέτειο των 200 χρόνων από την Ελληνική Επανάσταση του 1821».
Είναι τιμή μου που βοήθησα στην υποστήριξη αυτής της προσπάθειας. Μερικές φορές η ιστορία απαιτεί να προσαρμοζόμαστε και, με αυτόν τον τρόπο, δημιουργούμε νέες παραδόσεις που αντανακλούν τα ίδια διαχρονικά ιδανικά της ελευθερίας, της θυσίας και της δημοκρατίας που ενέπνευσαν την Επανάσταση του 1821.
