The use of plants for air conditioning in ancient Greece!
Houses in ancient Greece had to deal with many of the problems ours have today, especially the heat and cold. But let's see what the ancient Greeks did wisely, and we usually do not even bother to copy.
Green trees, such as olives, were usually planted on the north side of the house so that their leaves could prevent the winter cold north wind from blowing directly on the house.
On the south side, there were usually leafless trees, which did not prevent the sun from heating the house in winter and offered full shade in summer. We are meeting with the old ideas of natural coolness in buildings with the help of plants, as well as in some designs, many times to improve sound insulation from environmental noises.
But the ancient Greeks did not stop using plants for air conditioning. They used a carefully designed roof extension over the south doors and windows. The size of this extension was calculated to prevent the sun from falling on the house in the summer, but with a lower course in the winter this extension did not prevent it from heating the interior of the house.
Another clever alternative of theirs was to use vine ties of a certain height and width. They got almost the same results and ate grapes!
And of course, the color remained white, as you've seen so far in most traditional Greek homes! It is usually found on sunny islands and is used to minimize heat from the sun.
In addition, calcium, which is used to whiten the walls, especially in the Aegean islands, is also used for spraying and moisture absorption, insecticide, etc. It has many useful features such as
