September 12th, 1829 - The Battle of Petra
The village of Petra, between Livadeia and Thebes in Sterea Ellada, was the site of the final battle of the 1821 Greek Revolution.
Around 3000 Greeks, under the leadership of Dimitrios Ypsilantis, were fighting for the first time as a conventional Army, as opposed to fighting as various guerrilla bands and groups in the past.
An Ottoman force made up of 7000 Turks and Albanians, capitulated and were comprehensively swept aside, the Greeks suffered 3 deaths to the over 100 deaths of the Ottomans.
This Greek victory, for the first time forced the Turks to the negotiating table to seek a truce.
The victory at the Battle of Petra in 1829 under Dimitrios Ypsilantis, came 8 years after his brother Alexandros, launched the first battles of the Greek War of Independence, against the Ottomans in Wallachia in 1821.
